Shadow Work Prompts

Attachment Styles

Why do I keep repeating the same patterns in relationships?

The way we connect with others often begins long before our first relationship. It can be shaped by how safe, seen, and loved we felt growing up, and by the experiences that taught us what to expect from love.

If you've ever found yourself becoming attached too quickly, pulling away when someone gets close, overthinking small changes, or feeling afraid of being abandoned, these patterns may be trying to protect you from being hurt again.

These prompts are here to help you understand those patterns with curiosity rather than judgment.

  • 8.Do you usually fear people leaving, or fear people getting too close?
  • 9.How do you react when someone doesn't reply as quickly as you expected?

03

The Patterns You Repeat

  • 14.Have you noticed yourself being drawn to the same type of people?
  • 15.What do your last few relationships have in common?
  • 16.Have you ever stayed because you hoped someone would eventually change?
  • 17.Have you ever left before giving someone a chance to truly know you?
  • 18.Do you find yourself choosing familiarity over emotional safety?
  • 19.What's one relationship pattern that keeps repeating in your life?
04

Looking Beneath the Pattern

  • 20.What fear is your relationship pattern trying to protect you from?
  • 21.If you stopped reacting from that fear, what would change?
  • 22.What need have you been hoping other people will fulfill for you?
  • 23.In what ways have you abandoned your own needs to protect a relationship?
  • 24.What would a healthy, emotionally safe relationship feel like?
  • 25.What's one belief about love that you're ready to question?

What Did You Notice?

As you read through your answers, notice if the same belief appeared in different moments of your life. Sometimes the deepest wound isn't that someone left, it's the meaning we attached to their leaving. Awareness doesn't change the past, but it helps you stop letting the past define your present.

A Gentle Reminder

The ways you've learned to protect yourself weren't created because you were broken. They were created because, at one point, they helped you survive. You don't have to fight those parts of yourself anymore. You can begin understanding them with kindness, one step at a time.

One Small Step

The next time you fear someone is pulling away, pause before reacting. Ask yourself, "Am I responding to what's happening right now, or to something that happened long ago?" That one question can help you respond with awareness instead of fear.

You don't have to answer every prompt today. Come back whenever you're ready, this space will be here.
